The Medic System:
Meet “Robert Eugene Bush”
Our robot this year is operating under what we call a “medic” strategy; that is helping other teams accomplish in the ring what their robots cannot do. So we decided that the name of our robot should match that system, and who better to name our robot after than United States Navy Hospital Corpsman Robert Eugene Bush. Bush fought in the Battle of Okinawa, or rather, was a medic that was forced to become combatant due to an overrunning of Japanese soldiers. The story goes that while Bush was performing a blood transfusion on a fellow navy man the camp came under fire, and so while continuing to do the transfusion Bush pulled out his military issued 9 mm and started fighting off the Japanese with his brothers. He lost his right eye to grenade shrapnel and continued to fight. His service for the United States earned him the Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart. It is because of his service, and bravery, that we lovingly call our Robot R.E. Bush, or Eugene for short. Hopefully we can do as well with our medical system as he did his.
Team Cheer:
Project GUNG-HO!
During World War II there was a large amount of cooperation that had to go into defeating the Axis powers, especially between world super powers like China and the USA. While working together in China the Americans learned about Chinese team work and ethic. A word that was used often by many of them was “Gung-Ho”, which in Chinese means come together. When ever doing a tedious or difficult job the Chinese would collectively yell “Gung-Ho!” and then complete their work, moving forward. The Americans were so impressed by the Chinese work ethic and accountability that the phrase followed them as they returned home.
In honor of the work that our soldiers did in that time and the meaning of the word, Team 7797 has picked up the phrase themselves. Gung-Ho is used all throughout the team when ever going through difficult situations or having to work especially hard. The team has pulled together to work, and reminds itself that throughout the season using these simple words.
